Initial Screening- Audience Feedback

On December 17th I showed an audience of teenagers all the footage that I have edited together so far for my music video. I asked them to fill out some questions of what they like and enjoy about the video. I also asked them what they think I can improve or what else they would like to see in the finished music video.

From this I have found that our audience would like a moving background in the performance shots. Also some of the clips are too long and the narrative came across more like a mother and daughter instead of an older and younger sister like we planned.

Pitch of ideas

We wanted to have some similarities between the original music video and the one we will create. In the original music video there are a few scenes with star like projections so in our music video we wanted a galaxy theme to the performance shots like it's a place where the character can escape to.

We also decided to take the lyrics literally. For this we decided to have a bond between two sisters as the narrative idea. We will also include some similar shots like the ones below.

Planning for Digipak and Magazine advert

Here is two ideas for the digipak we have to create. Idea 1 is inspired by the galaxy theme that runs throughout the music video for 'Mother We Share' and our idea for our music video. Idea 2 is a bit more creative and dark which is also a theme that we want to include in out music video.

For our magazine cover we were inspired by The Vaccines poster and Lorde's ablum cover. We also want the poster to be similar to the digipak like CHVRCHES poster and digipak.

Editing software plans

The main effects we will be using within our video are:

1. Double exposure - We will be using this when Abbie is in the streets, drunk. This will create an effect of point of view and to show how her character is feeling.

2. The projector - even though this is a physical effect, we will also use this when doing the double exposure and to allow it to relate back to the chosen genre.

3. Text - this will be shown towards the beginning of the video. What will be written is the artist name along with the song title as this is similar to their original music video.

To edit the video we will be using Premier Pro as this is a standard program that we are familiar with from using this previously.

Photographs of locations

We have decided to have most of the music video in a house. Therefore the main locations we will use are a bedroom, kitchen and a hallway. We will also film on a bus and outside on a street.

Bedroom- this will be used a lot throughout the music video

Kitchen- this location will also be used a few times in the music video

Kitchen- We will be able to get a range of camera angles because the kitchen is quite big

Hallway- here we will show the main characters arguing

Stairs- this is were the music video will start with the narrative scene

Street- this will be used for the main character to run down

Costume Planning

Our outfits will be inspired by this:

Here are the photos of my clothes that I will be wearing:
Black Jeans
Over sized Jumper

Grey Long sleeved top

Plaid Shirt

Boots

Mood board

This mood board is our inspiration for the music video. We decided to take inspiration from the "Mother We Share" music video with the galaxy theme. We will use a projector at school to achieve this look. The common make up look for this genre is either natural or dark lips and/or heavy eye liner. Also the hair is often in loose waves or in a messy bun.

Initial Planning ideas

When we were sharing our initial ideas we found we were not sure on what song we wanted to do so we made a mind map on the two songs we liked best.
"Come Together" by Echosmith
"Mother We Share" by CHVRCHES
We decided to do "Mother We Share" because we have more ideas for the music video.

Inspiration and Influences 9

Theory 8

Carol Vernallis' theory:

1) Narrative:
- The video is a response to the music

2) Editing:
-  The editing will match the musical phrase/beat
- Continuity editing is sometimes broken
3) Camera Movement and Framing:
- Mostly close ups and long shots are used
- Usually

4) Diegesis:
- Some frames might be more important than others
- There may be gaps in the audience's understanding of the diegesis - in time, space, performance and narrative.

- There isn't a balance between the narrative scenes and performance scenes
- The video may pose questions that it will not be answered in the video

- Characters or performer usually moves to the music
- The diegesis may be revealed slowly

Andrew Goodwin's theory:

1) Narrative and performance:
- Music videos contain typical genre characteristics
- It should be a balance between performance and narrative so that it is interesting

2) Star image:
- This has a big part it the production of the music video
- Gives the artist a particular look

3) Relation of visuals to the song:
- Three are three main ways to promote a song through a music video
a. Illustrate- a set of images to show the meaning of the lyrics and genre
b. Amplify- the meaning and effect of the song is shown through the video to change the way we listen to the song
c. Disjuncture- the meaning of the song is ignored completely

4) Technical aspects:
- Mise en scene
- Editing
- Camera movement and angles

Influence of style 6

From my research I can see that the outfits are quite trendy and edgy. The makeup is quite natural with a dark matte lip. I will use this information when planning the costumes for my music video.
